Matthew Statham
Matthew began his financial consulting with friends who also worked in the non-profit sectors. Friends who prioritized passion over their paychecks. But after years of seeing burnout, he believes in the power of financial education, first navigating the emotions of money, leading to a greater sense of peace and understanding.
My Background
I have spent most of my career working for churches and continue to do so, primarily with children, teens, and college students. In Dallas, I noticed many friends in similar fields prioritized passion over financial sustainability, leading to burnout and shame over poor financial habits. What I realized was that they needed help maintaining their passion and unpacking financial emotions, something that a self help book often couldn't do on its own. This realization inspired me to begin working with friends and client to reshape our beliefs about money, and take a different perspective on our financial emotional health.
Why Work with Me
I believe the thing that makes me different is the approach that I take through personalized consultations. I grew up and grew sick of the coaching style that yelled and barked at you. Books and talking heads that make you feel like an idiot for not already knowing the answer is why I have spent many sessions with clients in tears, unpacking the layers of financial trauma they've endured. Every story matters when it comes to shaping our financial habits and health. Some of my clients have needed help learning to spend, others to save. How about you?
Why I Coach
One of my first friends to ask for help struggled with credit cards. I asked her to share a bit about herself and she told a story about being grounded for bouncing a check at the age of 14 and her shameful debt. She slumped, her posture changed, and her voice lowered as she shared how she amassed over $16,000 of medical debt. We paused because the most important thing that day was learning that her value, personhood and identity were not connected to her debts or mistakes. They were problems to tackle but she was not unworthy or worthless.
