Added Security for YNAB with Two-Step Verification

The long-awaited security feature is here! At YNAB, protecting your data is our top priority. That’s why we are excited to announce you now have the option to add two-step verification as an additional layer of protection to your YNAB account. ?

Not sure what that’s all about?? When you enable two-step verification in your Account Settings, YNAB will ask you to log in with your email address, password, and a second form of authentication to verify that it’s really you. That way, if an unauthorized person has access to your password, they can’t log in to your account without the second step. It’s as secure as it gets!

Setting up two-step verification is a piece of cake. Just follow these simple steps:

Set Up Two-Step Verification

  • Go to Account Settings
  • Click on the Set Up under Two-Step Verification to get started
  • Verify your YNAB password
  • Download a verification app. We recommend Authy.
  • Using your verification app, scan the QR code or enter the code manually.
  • In YNAB, enter the 6-digit code your verification app generated
  • Save your emergency backup code*

*Your emergency backup code will get you back into your YNAB account if you’re ever locked out. Make sure to store it somewhere safe!

Setting Up With Your Partner

If you’re using YNAB with your partner, we encourage both of you to install a verification app to quickly log in. Make sure to have both your mobile devices on hand when you enable 2FA in Account Settings. When you’re ready, take the following steps:

  1. Go to Account Settings
  2. Click on the On/Off toggle to turn it on
  3. Verify your YNAB password
  4. Install a verification app like Authy on both devices.
  5. On each device, add your YNAB account to the verification app by scanning the QR code or manually entering the code.
  6. Using either of your verification apps, enter the 6-digit code into YNAB to verify that it’s successfully set up.
  7. Save your emergency backup code.

We encourage you to set up two-step verification for other accounts outside of YNAB as well. Keep your data safe, my friends!
