Acceptable Use Policy
LAST UPDATED: April 9, 2026
To ensure that YNAB remains a safe, positive, and respectful space for all users, we’ve established the following guidelines for uploading photos alongside your transactions (“YNAB Photos”). By using YNAB Photos, you agree to adhere to this Acceptable Use Policy (“AUP”).
Ownership and Copyright
You may only upload photos to YNAB if:
- You own the copyright to the image (this means that you created or photographed the image yourself or purchased or were otherwise given or granted the rights to the image), or
- You have explicit permission from the copyright holder (the person who took the picture, created the artwork, or owns the rights to the picture or artwork) to use and share the image in this context.
Please don’t upload photos that aren’t yours or that you don’t have rights to—doing so violates our AUP.
No Intellectual Property Infringement
You may not upload, post, or share content that infringes on any third party’s intellectual property rights, including, without limitation, copyrights, trademarks, trade secret, or proprietary information.
You also may not upload, post, or share pictures of branded images, copyrighted art, or other protected material unless you are the rightful owner or have obtained the necessary permissions.
If you violate this intellectual property provision, we have the right to disclose your identity or other information about you to any third party that claims that any material posted by you violates their intellectual property rights or their right to privacy.
Prohibited Content
To maintain a safe and respectful environment, the following types of content are strictly forbidden:
- Illegal content of any kind.
- Pornographic or sexually explicit material.
- Child sexual abuse material (CSAM), child pornography, or any content that threatens, exploits, or endangers children.
- Violent or graphic content, including imagery that depicts or encourages physical harm, suicide, death, terrorism, or abuse.
- Images of weapons, ammunition, or any material that promotes or causes violence or harm that are uploaded, presented, pictured, and/or sequenced in such a way where a reasonable person would suspect (i) that harm to the individual or others is imminent, (ii) that the individual who uploaded the images is planning to carry out a crime or has already committed or participated a crime, or (iii) that the images may inspire, incite, or induce others to commit violence against oneself or others. Photos of collectible weapons, hunting equipment, etc. are excluded from this prohibition, so long as the photos do not present evidence of a completed or planned crime.
- Material that is defamatory, obscene, indecent, abusive, harassing, violent, hateful, discriminatory, racist, offensive, inflammatory, or otherwise objectionable.
- Any content that violates local, state, national, or international laws or regulations or that violates the legal rights of others.
- Any content that contains malware, viruses, worms, Trojan horses, or other harmful code, or that you know (or reasonably should know) could compromise the security, functionality, or integrity of the Service, its systems, or its users.
YNAB has a zero-tolerance policy toward any content in these categories, and your account will be suspended or terminated if you upload any content containing the above.
No Harassment or Abuse
You may not use YNAB Photos to:
- Harass, stalk, threaten, or intimidate others.
- Upload photos with the intention of bullying, mocking, or targeting individuals or groups.
- Engage in discriminatory, hateful, or abusive behavior based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or any other protected characteristic.
Responsibility for Posted Content
You understand and acknowledge that you are responsible for any photos you submit, upload, or contribute, and you, and not YNAB, have full responsibility for such content, including its legality, reliability, accuracy, and appropriateness.
We are not responsible, or liable to any third party, for the content or accuracy of any photos uploaded by you or any other user of our Services. We do not undertake to review all material before it is posted, and cannot ensure prompt removal of objectionable content after it has been posted. Therefore, we assume no liability for any action or inaction regarding any content provided by any user.
Who Can See My Photos?
YNAB Photos is only viewable by you and anyone you share your account with, if on a YNAB Together plan. YNAB Support team members may be able to see your photos if you share screenshots featuring the photos or if you participate in a Live Screen Share session. A (very) small cohort of engineering team members may be able to see your photos if they are flagged for review.
For more on how we collect, handle, and use any data associated with your use of YNAB Photos, see our Privacy Policy.
Enforcement and Reporting
YNAB reserves the right to remove or refuse to post any photo or content that violates this policy or suspend access to this feature, with or without notice, at our sole discretion. We may also take any action with respect to any photo or content that we deem necessary or appropriate, including if we believe that the photo or content violates our Terms of Service, infringes on anyone’s intellectual property rights, threatens anyone’s personal safety, or if it creates any liability for YNAB.
Violations of our AUP may lead to suspension or termination of your YNAB account.
Additionally, we reserve the right to take appropriate legal action, including, without limitation, referral to law enforcement, for any illegal use of our products. We also reserve the right to fully cooperate with any law enforcement authorities or court order requesting or directing us to disclose the identity or other information of anyone posting any photos or content.
If you see content that violates this AUP, please report it by contacting Support at help@ynab.com. If you believe your account was terminated by mistake, contact Support.
